What is Sin?

February 9, 2010
By Bryan Boatman

Seven times in your Bible it is said “this is sin”, and define sin. It’s not what we’d normally think of sin: like adultery, lying, stealing, murder…

The Everyday life of a person without God

  • An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. Proverbs 21:4
  • Notice what this is NOT
  • Not an heinous crime
  • Not a bloody murder
  • Not extortion or bribery or theft
  • Notice what this IS
  • This man never regards God in his mind. He carries on everyday work as if he has no need for God. Plowing is a routine part of the farmer’s life. For those of us in the oilfield he could have said the drilling of the wicked is sin. The everyday work of a self sufficient man is sin.
  • He IS working so he’s not a bum.
  • He’s very proud of what he does and very ambitious.
  • Nothing this man will count for righteousness nor will it last. The example Luke 12:16-21

Foolish Thoughts

  • The thought of foolishness is sin. Proverbs 24:9
  • foolish thoughts lead to foolish activities
  • foolish activities get you into trouble
  • the Lord doesn’t look at the tree to see if it’s bad, He looks at the seed and declares it bad
  • thoughts that aren’t bad, but are foolish
  • the greatest punishment leveled on man since creation was b/c of his thought life—Genesis 6:5-7. God said the
  • thoughts and imaginations of his heart are evil continually
  • THE REMEDY: Phillippians 4:8

Faithlessness

  • Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.  Romans 14:23
  • The sinful ingredient is Doubt
  • The absence of Godly direction in our lives
  • Don’t decide until you have peace from God by talking to God in prayer and listening to what He said in His words–the Bible.  How many decisions have you made in life without Godly direction?

Blatant Disobedience

  • Therefore, to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17
  • Not even doing some BAD, but just withholding good
  • Knowing the right thing to do and doing the wrong thing
  • We forget how often we do this and then complain about the consequences of our decisions

The Outlaw

  • For sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4
  • Some might say I just break little ones here and there, but never murder, but if they were so little how easily you could’ve obeyed them
  • The usual response of “I’ve never killed anyone” but there are other laws than that. Lying is one of them.
  • Second, that is not a defense to the laws you have broken—(speeding ticket doesn’t go away because you drive good most of the time)
  • Matthew 22:38, one law to sum up them all—Love the Lord thy God w/all heart, soul, mind.
  • The lady that said she never sinned.  She admitted she had never done loved the Lord that way. At 70 years old, 365 days a year of breaking the first and greatest commandment (25,550)

The Things Done Wrong

  • All unrighteousness is sin. 1 John 5:17
  • Everything that isn’t right is sin

Destruction of the Flesh

  • The sting of death is sin. 1 Corinthians 15:56
  • The thing that gets you in the end is sin the biological answer from the doctor may be cancer, the Bible says sin
sin gets the best of everyone in this earth

Jesus Christ takes away sin

  • 1 John 3:5
  • John 1:29
  • Receive Jesus Christ as the savior from your sins.
